Wipe Out Lead

Real Stories

The effects of lead poisoning are devastating. Not just because it undermines a child’s potential, robbing their bodies and their brains but also because this problem is 100% preventable.

Neighborhoods whose residents are already struggling with implications of poverty are also more likely to be at risk for the dangers of lead poisoning. That’s why the Wipe Out Lead campaign was created – to provide those people who have limited resources and so many other challenges to worry about – with the help and support to create a healthier lead-safe environment for their children.

If you think your home has lead paint in it, call 716/712-5500 to find out how to get your children tested and to find out how you can make your home safe.

Buffalo resident Kim Lewis cares for several of her young grandchildren in her home on Liddell Street.  After she learned about how children can become sick from being exposed to peeling lead paint she knew she had a problem.

With the help of volunteers and free materials from the Wipe Out Lead campaign, Kim's house was freshly painted and no longer is a threat to her grandchildrens' health.

Gordon Williams owns several properties in downtown Buffalo.  He found out about the Wipe Out Lead campaign and the services available through Environmental Education Associates and the free classes they offer to help educate homeowners on lead safe work practices.

Now having taken a class and become certified to work with lead-based paint, Williams is in the process of making his properties safer for the families that live in them.  In addition, he's received free paint and supplies as well as the assistance of a part-time painter making the work go quicker and better.

Williams wants others to know that help is available:  "I didn't realize the problem of lead paint was as bad as it is.  Now I know and the help and support I've received to help me fix up my homes has been huge.  The people I've dealt with really are concerned with what's going on -- they're straight shooters and easy to work with."
